Welcome! Edit

Hi Fred Bauder -- we are excited to have MUD Wiki as part of the Wikia community! Thanks for joining us, and we'd like to give you some tips to help you get started on making your wiki great.

Your first four steps: Edit

1. Create your User Page - this is a great place to introduce yourself (and practice wiki-editing!)

2. Add a logo - learn how to create a logo image, then click here to add it to the wiki.

Create an article on this wiki:

3. Create your first 10 articles - use the box on the right to create ten pages, starting each one off with a few sentences. For example if you are starting a wiki on a TV show, you might create an article for each main character and for each episode of the show.

4. Edit your Main Page - add internal links to the ten articles you just created, and any other improvements you can think of.

Once you've done these four things, you've created a great starting point -- your wiki looks friendly and ready for visitors. You can then invite some friends to help you create the next twenty pages, and expand the ones you've built.

Keep going! The more pages you create and link to each other, the sooner that others who are searching for "MUD Wiki" will be able find your project in search engines, read your content and join you in editing.

If you have more questions, we've provided a full set of help pages, or you can email us through our contact form. Don't forget to check out other wikis on Wikia for ideas on layout, organizing your pages, and more. Have fun!

Best wishes, Catherine Munro @Wikia

Hi there! Edit

I'm Richard1990. I'm a Helper who specializes in Gaming Wikis. I want to cheer you on for having started a new gaming-related wiki, and see if there is anything I can help a fellow Wikian with. So if you need help with any thing, don't hesitate to ask!

I've got some tips for you here:

  • Main Page protection – Wikia has a general policy of not protecting the Main Page unless it is the target of recurring heavy vandalism. For more info, check out Help:Main page on Wikia Help.
  • Main Page title – You will notice that the Main Page of your wiki (the page that appears when you click on your wiki's logo) will be "<subject> Wiki". This is to improve your wiki's Google rank, so it is recommended that you do not change the name of that page. For more info, check out Advice:Raising your wiki's Google ranking at Wikia Help.
  • Logo - If you need help making logos for your wiki, you can ask for help at this forum thread. For the Monaco and Monobook skin you can upload a 135 x 155 pixels image to Image:Wiki.png.
  • Your user page – Use your user page to introduce yourself to other new visitors, so the wiki has a more personal feeling to it and luring visitors to stay and become involved. People without a userpage do not get listed in the "Featured users" listing no matter how active they are, so make sure you add something to your user page to appear in there!
  • Wikia Gaming IRC – There is a Wikia gaming IRC channel, #wikia-gaming, where you can hop on, ask for help from users of other gaming wikis, or offer your own experiences. You can access it from http://irc.wikia.com/gaming, or connect to it by your own client at irc://irc.freenode.net/wikia-gaming. Different people may be on sporadically, though you're free to ask them for any help.

Again, if you have any question for anything at all, don't hesitate to ask me!--Richardtalk 20:56, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Left you a message on Wikipedia as well... Edit

I went ahead and made a LegendMUD article here with a mix of both reminiscences and citations. Thanks for getting this Wiki set up :) --RaphKoster 09:36, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Unable to create new page Edit

I'm unable to create a new page. MorganRamsay 10:27, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

I disabled CreatePage in my preferences and I was finally able to create a new page. MorganRamsay 11:12, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Advice requested Edit

If I am putting stuff in the wrong place, let me know. I am not familiar with conventions around this stuff. :) --RaphKoster 03:05, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Captcha Edit

Is there any way to remove the captcha that appears after editing an article? Perhaps only for registered users and eventually only for registered users with X number of edits? MorganRamsay 05:37, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

I could if I controlled the software, but I don't here. Not sure how long it lasts. Fred Talk 05:39, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
4 days and(or?) 10 edits is the "newbie" limiter i think. but once that happens, you should not be seeing captcha --Uberfuzzy 22:34, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
and you should only be getting one if you try to add a url link to a page --Uberfuzzy 22:38, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
As a design consideration, you guys might consider a "new wiki" grace period, so that early contributors don't have to deal with the captcha as we are here. --MichaelChui 02:43, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Importing articles Edit

I'm not sure how anyone else feels about this issue, but I'm not keen on the whole importing articles from Wikipedia thing. We should instead put together a list of articles to create, and then create them with the purpose of this wiki in mind. MorganRamsay 07:02, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm very intentionally cherry-picking, because as Raph pointed out for DikuMUD, the information on Wikipedia is sometimes quite good, but there was also that huge article he wrote that I also integrated. I'd rather use half-decent Wikipedia articles than build every one from scratch, when it makes sense. Reinventing the wheel and stuff. MichaelChui 07:21, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
Articles written for Wikipedia were written for an entirely different purpose. It's a lot more work to revamp a large article than to write an article specifically for the purposes of this wiki from scratch. MorganRamsay 09:31, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
I'm certainly quite dissatisfied with some of them. They give no sense of what it is like to play the game. Fred Talk 13:10, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Porting Over TemplatesEdit

Hey, Fred. Sorry about being so slow to get back into the Wiki thing. I've been gathering our sources lately. Could I request that this template be ported over? I started to do it manually but realized that Wikia may have some porting functions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Cite_magazine Kallimina 11:32, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Nevermind. I think it's already ported over, or else you just did it. Thanks! Kallimina 12:14, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
I did now Template:Cite magazine redirects to Template:Cite journal. Fred Talk 12:23, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Nice to meet you!Edit

Fred, Sorry I wasn't able to stop by and say hi before now. I'm the sr. marketing manager here at Wikia, and oversee the gaming communities. I would love to help you guys out in any way I can, I posted a comment on the history article on Edge that mentioned MUD here. Please let me know if there is anything the gaming team can help you out with. -- Doug@Wikia (talk) 19:50, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Featured? Edit

Hello Fred, How do you become a featured article? Thanks! Robynstl 01:47, March 16, 2010 (UTC)

Just make a suggestion. There does have to be a reasonably good article though. We can rotate these. Fred Talk 01:49, March 16, 2010 (UTC)

Greetings Edit

I'm afraid you've got a slight Locke infestation. KaVir (talk) 20:43, January 20, 2013 (UTC)

I have no idea regarding his assertions. He seems to like to name names. Fred Talk 22:28, January 20, 2013 (UTC)

Hiya Fred, been a long time since we first came here to discuss MUDs free of Wikipedia. Unfortunately, one of the people who helped ruin the Wikipedia article, a new user here named Kavir, who is a publicly voiced "hater" of me, has finally found his way to the mud.wikia article "Online Creation" .. his bias against me is written about in the article, so he keeps coming to undo edits. I wanted to point out with this screenshot that he has come here truly for this purpose. I don't trust his motives -- he manages to become an administrator at sites just to ban me from them or otherwise insult me or attack my character. Sorry to trouble you with this. I really enjoyed having a voice here.

I am not an "infestation", I'm a person. One whom Kavir has repeatedly annoyed and harassed over the last 10 years.

Kavir

KaVir has a keen interest in the Online Creation article.

Madmerv (talk) 04:39, January 22, 2013 (UTC)

Ok, a little more factual details and a little less outing of people. We don't need real names of users in articles. And keep in mind you cannot copyright ideas, only text and code. Some innovations might have been eligible for patents if they had been applied for. Kavir seems quite reasonable and competent in other contexts. Fred Talk 11:22, January 22, 2013 (UTC)

Fred, his name is publicly available, I didn't reveal anything that isn't common knowledge.   [[2]] ... this guy has bothered, abused, harassed and defamed me for years now. I hate him.  He makes me physically ill. He will pester and pester you until my voice is silenced.  And then, he'll send me some private email laughing about how I'm screwed.  98.236.31.128 16:18, January 22, 2013 (UTC)

Locke was banned from Wikipedia for using multiple sockpuppets to repeatedly rewrite history and insert himself into the credits of other peoples games.  As you can see from my edit history, in 2009 he tried to do the same to me here.  I am happy to give credit where it is due, but I do not appreciate people trying to claim credit for something they had nothing to do with.
His mud was removed from The Mud Connector because he stripped out the Diku credits and refused to restore them, which is against the policies there.  He was also caught red-handed on other occasions stripping the copyright notices out of other peoples work and passing it off as his own, something which earned him a bad reputation among the developer community, for obvious reasons.  It also didn't help his credibility that he claims to have invented YouTube, fixed PayPal, named Microsoft Vista, influenced the design of the Hummer H3, etc, etc.
Yes, I went to court and began to prove my claims on YouTube until they used an anti-lawsuit part of the law. [[3]] Madmerv (talk) 16:37, January 22, 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I went to Carnegie Mellon University and I worked for GM and Intel. Madmerv (talk) 16:37, January 22, 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I suggested Vista in an interview with Microsoft because they were looking for a new name. I most recently worked for a company that did business directly with Microsoft this year. It's not uncommon in the tech industry to interface with Microsoft, a huge player in the business. Madmerv (talk) 16:37, January 22, 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I suggested improvements when PayPal Fraud Department needed them during issues with PayPal and me and phishing against me in 2006. Madmerv (talk) 16:37, January 22, 2013 (UTC)
I don't know why he was eventually banned (I'm not an administrator, despite his claim, just an auditor - I have no power there, I'm just expected to report listing issues to the site owner) but I would speculate it was for creating sockpuppets to promote his shady online service - a mud hosting service where he creates admin characters without the mud owners' knowledge (as revealed in the recent discussion on TMC).
Sure you do, you did it. And because of this ban, I can't link Fred to articles where you and the others mentioned harass me. But, Fred or whomever else can go search for the term "Locke" at MudBytes or Mudconnect and see the stupid 100 post responses to a simple announcement I make, or the countless other complains about me from people I don't even know because of Kavir's use of FUD. Madmerv (talk) 16:37, January 22, 2013 (UTC)
His code was removed from MudBytes because he had stripped out the copyright notices of the original authors.  I am not an administrator on there either, but I do know they are very strict about respecting the rights of mud developers.  He was actually banned from that site in 2006, following numerous complaints about his behaviour - the recent ban was just his sockpuppet, once his identity was discovered.
a lie, see for yourself @ nimud.org -- also, why is NiMUD singled out when CircleMUD also violates the license with some of its derivatives?98.236.31.128 16:19, January 22, 2013 (UTC)
Several of his posts were removed from Top Mud Sites because he was promoting code that violated the licence conditions.  But the final straw for the owner of that site was when Locke posted this thread: http://www.topmudsites.com/forums/legal-issues/6158-kavir-cyberbully.html - I recommend reading it, along with the Mudconnector thread it refers to, it'll give you a better idea of the background.
There is no conspiracy here.  Locke has nobody to blame for his bans other than himself, and he's already been told that if he restores the missing copyright notices and follows the licences he can upload his software.  Rather than accepting responsibility for his actions, he seems to be looking for a scapegoat, and this site is one of the few places in the mud community that hasn't yet banned him.
No, that's not true, it follows the license and there is no issue and I won't be given that ability because you've turned Davion against me. Madmerv (talk) 16:39, January 22, 2013 (UTC)
I try to ignore him as much as possible, but when he uses this wiki to claim credit for my work, create insulting articles about me, and post libellous statements about myself and other members of the mud community, I have little choice but to come here and remove it.  KaVir (talk) 12:25, January 22, 2013 (UTC)
That's preposterous, I've never claimed anything about his work other than it sucks.  98.236.31.128 16:20, January 22, 2013 (UTC)

I'm sure there are rights and wrongs here; however the essence of a game is having fun adventuring; if I wanted to fight I could go visit the neighbor. Fred Talk 16:42, January 22, 2013 (UTC)

A long time ago Kavir was a player and a fan of my MUD. He has made it his personal journey to attack me every day since he left. Madmerv (talk) 16:50, January 22, 2013 (UTC)
Despite Locke claiming I'm a "new user" (as if that should somehow mean I'm not permitted to delete libellous comments about myself), the screenshot to "prove" his claim actually shows I joined on 26th February 2009.  If you look at my contribution history, the first change I made was to remove his claim that his "world generation code was influential in the design of Godwars and Godwars2 by Richard Woolcock".  The world system in God Wars II is one the two main features that make it stand out from other muds, so I can understand why he'd try to claim credit for the idea, but it's still a boldfaced lie.
And no, I wasn't a NiMUD player.  However I've heard that exact same line many times over the years from the owners of muds I've audited - that I'm a disgruntled ex-player, that I'm unfairly targeting them, etc.  They all think the audit is something personal, but it's not.
The difference is that most of them move on.  Locke was banned from Top Mud Sites because he dragged the issue there, and his most recent sockpuppet was identified and banned from MudBytes because the mud listing he promoted included personal insults about me, which immediately made people suspicious and start investigating his identity.  Now he's doing exactly the same thing here.  He just can't drop it, and it's not just me he's dragging into it this time - he's using MUD Wiki to launch his latest smear campaign against the two biggest mud-oriented websites as well as three other big names in the mud community.
Such behaviour is not constructive, and it doesn't benefit anyone. KaVir (talk) 18:45, January 22, 2013 (UTC)
Oops, minor detail missed. But, it seems your edits didn't come until last week. Anyway, cretin, this discussion has moved to another page. I will respond to your points there. Madmerv (talk) 18:49, January 22, 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I'm a friend of "Madmerv" the "banned user" ... I don't see why he was banned and Kavir was not banned. Obviously Kavir's motivations are questionable at best, and it seems here that he egged Merv on and when Merv responded you banned Merv but not Kavir for instagating with a personal attack.Murtle52 (talk) 23:43, January 31, 2013 (UTC)

Yes, I am probably more sensitive to someone calling someone a cretin than I am to someone describing the other's editing as an infestation. Neither is acceptable. Either is good grounds for a permanent ban. Fred Talk 02:59, February 1, 2013 (UTC)

Act of War Edit

Sorry about that, the article is due for deletion on Wikipedia so I was copying it across to here, but it didn't copy properly - I was trying to edit it but you were too fast for me!  I think it's okay now though.

KaVir (talk) 19:06, May 31, 2013 (UTC)

Land of Chaos - Darkshadow Edit

I played Land of Chaos at the age of 14. I'm 25 now but God damn I still remember pvping against some of my toughest opponents till this day.

Yes, I still have a memory and dream life in BatMUD. Fred Talk 10:53, December 21, 2013 (UTC)

Interwiki-ing Edit

Hi Fred,

I've reverted the reversion to AVATAR MUD for the moment.  Your explanation wasn't clear and it was an extensive edit.  It appeared that you objected to inter-wiki linking (which I realise wasn't your intended meaning - but the edit summary was very brief.)  So, before I can set about doing some corrective editing, it'd be great if you could elaborate a bit.

Personally, I'm pro-red-links in articles, I think it encourages the creation of new content and helps to illuminate holes in coverage - however I have encountered other editors who oppose them, hence my tidying them quickly with cross-links.  Terms linked in the article which are not the limited to MUDing, which have decent articles elsewhere, and which are on subjects unlikely to ever be covered here should be cross-linked, right?  MUD links can be localised, of course, so I can re-red link those if you like, though there would only be a couple (Circle, Sequent, if I recall).  How broad an umbrella do you think MUD Wiki should encompass regarding articles on things like "IP address" or "Command prompt?"

If you have any other feedback about the article, e.g the order of the sections, etc. I would like to hear it.  Also, thanks for putting the commons template on that image for me and the welcome message.

LogRunners (talk) 17:44, April 13, 2014 (UTC)

My preference is to red link possible mud-related subjects and to avoid external links to subjects that are not mud-related. There are occasional subjects such as University of Wales, Aberystwyth and University of Essex which played significant historical roles, but external links to elaborate articles on Wikipedia don't seem relevant to our purpose. Fred Talk 18:07, April 13, 2014 (UTC)
I de-linked some topics, either over-linking, or through assuming a slightly higher level of technical knowledge in the readers.  Topics which ought to receive attention here, such as 'role-playing' or 'area' have been red-linked.  Topics of interest relating to the history or nature of the MUD have been retained, as have computing terms not commonly understood by your typical twelve year old.
I'll probably do some rephrasing to eliminate terms like "old-school" which can cause problems for international readers, and some of the wikipedia links are probably better served either by links to the wiktionary project or possibly concise in-line clarification (I'll have double-check meta's policy on those), but I need to do that another day.
LogRunners (talk) 20:10, April 13, 2014 (UTC)

Thanks - I appreciate it! No questions as of yet - hopefully I've got it laid out well. :)
