As this template is use on many pages, it should be protected.

Namespace "Image" might change name to "File". On 7 October 2008 it was announced at the Village pump that the "image" namespace is probably going to be renamed to "file" at about 13 October. This template has been updated to understand both names. Thus this template will continue to work as before. If the namespace rename really happens we will move this template to {{file other}} and {{image other}} will be redirected to the new name. --David Göthberg (talk) 06:26, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

This is the {{image other}} meta-template.

It helps other templates detect what type of page they are on.

Usage Edit

This template usually takes two parameters, like this:

{{image other | Image page text | Other pages text }}

If the template is on an image page, it will return this:

Image page text

If the template is on any other page, it will return this:

Other pages text

A typical usage case could be to make it so that a template only adds a category when on image pages. Thus not adding other pages that just show the template. Like this:

{{image other | [[Category:Some image maintenance category]] }}

Or to warn that a template should not be used on other pages:

{{image other | | This template should only be used on image pages. }}

Note that in the first case above the "other" parameter was not used, and in the second example the "image" parameter was left empty.

For testing and demonstration purposes this template can take a parameter named demospace: if it has the values image or other it makes the template behave as if it is on a page of that type; if the parameter is empty or undefined, the actual page type determines the result.

Note that this template detects "Image talk:" pages as type other.
